CANADA TOPS AUSTRIA IN NATIONS CUP TUNE-UP

DAVID BRIEN

ST. PÖLTEN, Austria – Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) found the back of the net twice to lead the offence and help Canada’s National Women’s Development Team to a 5-2 win over Austria on Wednesday in the first of three pre-tournament games ahead of the 2016 Nations Cup.

Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Dartmouth College, ECAC), Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Shelby Bram (St. Anne, Man./Buffalo, NWHL) rounded out Canada’s scoring.

Special teams were big for both teams; the Canadians scored three times on six power-play opportunities, while Austria recorded both of its goals with the man advantage.

The Canadians controlled the play in the first period, holding a dominant 16-1 advantage in shots on goal, and Mercer and Stacey scored on the power play within the first eight minutes for an early 2-0 Canadian lead.

Mercer added her second on a feed from Cassandra Poudrier (Lachenaie, Que./Cornell University, ECAC) just shy of the five-minute mark of the second period, before Anna Meixner got Austria on the board at 9:55.

The Austrian momentum didn’t last long; Rattray and Bram, on the power play, scored goals 58 seconds apart less than four minutes after Meixner’s goal, allowing Canada to take a 5-1 lead to the third period.

Austrian goaltender Paula Marchhart stole the show in the third period, turning away all 17 shots she faced, and Antonia Matzka capitalized on a two-man advantage with 11 seconds to go to round out the scoring.

Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont./University of Connecticut, HE) needed to make just 10 saves to record the win, as the Canadians finished with a one-sided advantage in shots on goal, 47-12.

Canada is right back on the ice Thursday at the Klenk Dome in St. Pölten, ringing in the New Year against Hungary (10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT) in its second pre-tournament outing.

LE CANADA BAT L’AUTRICHE EN MATCH PRÉPARATOIRE À LA COUPE DES NATIONS

DAVID BRIEN

ST.
