PAULS SCORES OT WINNER (AGAIN), U.S. DEFENDS WSHC GOLD

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – Josh Pauls was the golden-goal-getter in overtime for the second year in a row, netting the game-winner 7:31 into the extra period to give the United States a 3-2 win over Canada in the final Saturday at the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.

It’s the second year in a row the Americans have won gold, and keeps them in possession of the three biggest titles in sledge hockey – the World Sledge Hockey Challenge, IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, and Paralympic Winter Games.

With the U.S. swarming the Canadian net – holding a massive 10-0 advantage in shots on goal in overtime – Pauls took a pass in the slot from Declan Farmer, made a quick move and roofed a shot over the blocker of Canadian goaltender Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.).

Farmer and Brody Roybal, had a goal and two assists each in the win, and finished one-two in tournament scoring with 12 points and 11 points, respectively, in five games.

Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) and Ben Delaney (Ottawa, Ont.) had the goals for Canada, which trailed 2-0 after two periods, but pulled even before the five-minute mark of the final frame.

The Americans got off to a red-hot start, striking twice in the opening period while outshooting Canada 10-2.

Roybal started the scoring at 5:11, beating Watson from the slot, and he set up Farmer’s power play goal at 13:35 to send the Americans to the dressing room up by a pair.

Canada turned the tide in a scoreless second period, outshooting the U.S. 8-2, but it failed to convert on its only power play opportunity of the game and headed to the third still training by two.

Needing a quick start to the final period, Bowden knocked in the rebound of his own shot with just 65 seconds off the clock, and Delaney took a pass from Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) and went under his sled before tucking the puck around U.S. goaltender Steve Cash at 4:03 to tie the game.

The Canadians held an 18-16 advantage in shots on goal through regulation, but the play stayed in the defensive zone for almost the entirety of overtime before Pauls’ winner.

Canada has won a medal at all nine editions of the World Sledge Hockey Challenge, earning five gold, three silver, and a bronze, while the Americans have four gold, two silver, and three bronze in their nine trips.

BRIDGEWATER, N.-É. – Josh Pauls a marqué le but en or en prolongation pour une deuxième année de suite, comptant à 7 min 31 s de la prolongation pour permettre aux États-Unis de vaincre le Canada 3-2 en finale, samedi, au Défi mondial de hockey sur luge 2016.

C’est la deuxième année de suite que les Américains gagnent l’or ce qui leur permet de conserver les titres des trois plus importants événements du hockey sur luge – le Défi mondial de hockey sur luge, le Championnat mondial de hockey sur luge du CIP et les Jeux paralympiques d’hiver.

Alors que les États-Unis bourdonnaient autour du filet canadien – dominant 10-0 au chapitre des tirs au but en prolongation – Pauls a capté une passe de Declan Farmer en zone privilégiée, a exécuté une feinte rapide et a décoché un tir dans la partie supérieure par-dessus le gant bloqueur du gardien de but canadien Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.).

Farmer et Brody Roybal ont obtenu un but et deux aides chacun dans la victoire. Ils terminent le tournoi aux deux premiers rangs des pointeurs avec 12 et 11 points respectivement en cinq matchs.

Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) et Ben Delaney (Ottawa, Ont.) ont compté pour le Canada qui tirait de l’arrière 2-0 après deux périodes avant de niveler le pointage avant la cinquième minute du dernier tiers.

Les Américains ont connu un départ fulgurant, marquant deux fois en première période et dominant le Canada 10-2 dans la colonne des tirs au but.

Roybal a ouvert la marque à 5 min 11 s, déjouant Watson d’un tir de la zone privilégiée, et il a préparé le but de Farmer en avantage numérique à 13 min 35 s pour permettre aux Américains de rentrer au vestiaire avec une avance de deux buts.

Le Canada a inversé la vapeur au cours d’une deuxième période sans but, dominant les États-Unis 8-2 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais il n’a pu profiter de sa seule supériorité numérique du match et a entrepris la troisième période en accusant un déficit de deux.

Devant connaître un bon départ pour entreprendre le dernier tiers, Bowden s’est emparé de son propre rebond et a fait mouche après seulement 65 secondes, puis Delaney a capté une passe d’Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) et a trompé la vigilance du gardien de but américain Steve Cash à 4 min 3 s pour niveler le pointage.

Les Canadiens ont eu un avantage de 18-16 au chapitre des tirs au but en temps réglementaire, mais le jeu est resté dans sa zone défensive pour presque toute la prolongation avant le but gagnant de Pauls.

Le Canada a remporté une médaille lors des neuf éditions du Défi mondial de hockey sur luge, remportant cinq fois l’or, trois fois l’argent et une fois le bronze tandis que les Américains ont accumulé quatre médailles d’or, deux d’argent et trois de bronze à leurs neuf participations.
