SPOONER SCORES TWICE TO LEAD CANADA TO SEMIFINAL WIN OVER SWITZERLAND; CANADA TO GO FOR GOLD IN SOCHI

KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE

SOCHI, Russia – A first-period offensive burst, including two goals from Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) and a first Olympic marker from rookie Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que./McGill University, CIS), helped Canada’s National Women’s Team top Switzerland 3-1 in semifinal action Monday inside Shayba Arena.

Their fourth-straight victory in Sochi sends the Canadians into Thursday’s gold medal game at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, once again against archrivals the United States.

The gap on the scoreboard in Monday’s game could have been wider if not for the outstanding performance of Swiss goaltender Florence Schelling, who made a whopping 45 saves, a smile on her face the whole time.

Canadian netminder Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta./Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, ACAC) stood just as steadfast between the posts at the other end of the ice, making 21 saves against a persistent Swiss team.

But an early lead gave Canada the edge, with Spooner’s first goal coming at 7:29 into the game, when she went top shelf to beat Schelling. Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./University of Calgary, CIS) was credited with the assist.

Less than four minutes later, Wickenheiser again created a smart offensive play, getting the puck to Catherine Ward (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL) at the point. Ward let off a quick shot that was easily tipped in by Spooner to make it 2-0 at 11:10 in the first.

Daoust added her goal less than 90 seconds later, digging for the puck at the side of the Switzerland net and finding the open spot on the right side at 11:33 in the period. Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) got the helper to make it 3-0 going into the intermission.

But with 40 minutes still left to play, Switzerland wasn’t giving up, and that “no quit” attitude paid off on a power play at 5:14 in the second, when Szabados ended up outside of her net. Jessica Lutz capitalized by putting the puck into the open space and cut into the Canadian lead for a 3-1 game.

Switzerland continued its gritty pressure, while “Florence and the machine” continued to stonewall Canadian shots, to keep the score close and the semifinal tense right until the final horn sounded. But the Swiss couldn’t crack Szabados again, and Canada earned its way back into the women’s hockey Olympic final.

“I thought we had a really good start to the game … that was the key,” Szabados told CBC Sports after the game. “We expected them to come out hard … so you just always have to be ready.”

Canada looks to defend its gold medal this Thursday, Feb. 20. The puck drops against the U.S. at the Bolshoy Ice Dome at noon ET/9 a.m. PT. Watch live on CBC and follow game updates at www.twitter.com/hc_women.

SPOONER MARQUE DEUX FOIS POUR MENER LE CANADA À UNE VICTOIRE DE 3-1 SUR LA SUISSE EN DEMI-FINALE; LE CANADA JOUERA POUR L’OR À SOTCHI

KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE
